Teacher’s Pet: Knowledge (Arcana) Professor Lorrimor traveled the Inner Sea region lecturing and teaching at universities in locations as far-flung as Manaket and Magnimar, and as different in scope as the bardic colleges of Taldor and the battle colleges of the River Kingdoms. Speak
Nikola Munteanu is the second-eldest (by a mere 13 months) son of Vieland merchant Sergei Munteanu and his wife Mirela. The Munteanu family is quite well respected throughout the Palatinates and beyond, having operaed a prosperous trading company out of Liepstadt for the past five generations.
Niku grew up mosty on his family’s country estate some miles outside of Liepstadt. He and his elder brother Valeriu were inseparable companions throughout their childhood and adolescence despite having very different natures; Valriu being by far the more ambitious, studious and responsibe brother while Nikola was a free spirit—impulsive and somewhat undisciplined, yet more intellectually gifted than his harder-working sibling.
When Nikola was sixteen years old he and Valeriu were both admitted to the University at Leipstadt. Together they applied to join the Malkenclaw dueling fraternity, and were thrilled to learn that both of them had been accepted as as pledges. The future looked very bright indeed for the Munteanu brothers, but suddenly tragedy struck when Valeriu was killed during his initiation duel. Deaths in such bouts were virtually unheard-of, as they were always fought under strict supervision and only to first blood, but Valeriu’s opponent got through his guard and scored an (un)lucky thrust that opened a wound in his belly that not even the fraternity’s surgeon—one of the most skilled the university had ever graduated—could stanch in time, and Valeriu bled to death in Niku’s arms.
From that point on Niku’s life took a very different path from what he had expected, or rather, from what his father had expected from him. He quit the fraternity in disgust at their reckless disregard for their own lives and those of their “brothers-in-arms”, although he did continue to study swordwmanship with a private tutor as he had no intention of suffering his brother’s fate should he ever be forced to defend himself. He withdrew from the safe course of study he had embarked upon, one that would have prepared him for a prosperous but dull life as a merchant, and took up instead the subjects that fired his imagination. He also determined to get the most out of life in the here and now; whenever his studies permitted he headed for Liepstadt’s taverns, theaters and, occasionally, far less savory haunts to take in all life had to offer.
These changes did not come without a cost. Nikolae’s father became increasingly annoyed with him over his expenses, lifestyle and “pointless” academic pursuits and eventually cut him off financially. If it hadn’t been for the goodwill and influence of one Professor Lorrimor, who had taken an interest in Niku while guest-lecturing at Leipstadt, it’s certain the lad wouldn’t have been able to complete his studies.
